Best methods for driving Traffic for Media Sites

So lately I have been working closely with a News Media site which is just about to launch in 2 weeks.

I have been contracted to work with their marketing team so we can drive massive amounts of traffic to their website during the launch period and there after.

Because they are trying to build a “proper brand” it is my job to keep the marketing of the site as “white hat” as possible.

I have been doing research for the past 3 weeks on how the most successful media websites drive traffic to their stories and site.

So how do they drive their traffic?

- Type in traffic
- Google news
- RSS feeds
- Favorites
- Google type in traffic
- Twitter
- Email News letters
- Digg
- Mixx
- Reddit
- Other social bookmarking sites
- Link backs from authority blogs
- Google ad words
- Yahoo SEM
- Widgets
- Mobile

The new thing which seems to work really well is the twitter effect. If there is breaking news the media websites link their stories from their twitter account and this would drive a lot of traffic to that specific article.

The next thing which works well is the Google news. This has been around for a while and it drives up to 40% of traffic for some websites.

The other good idea is to link your top stories from Google ad words which a small budget. $100 could drive up to 2000 unique visitors to your site. In return you would hope they browse other stories and sign up as members etc.

Widgets have been gaining a lot of momentum as well in the past year. Building a widget with the RSS feeds in showing the top story definitely works. It will require the right audience for it though or you will need to market it to your audience in the right way.

Social book marking effect is another awesome way to get drive large amounts of traffic to media sites. If you have the right content which is “News” or technology related this could bring in a lot of long term traffic.

I will update this article as I learn more from my experience. I am also working design structures for the sites to see which keeps the users for longer and what kind of things they click on after reading a story.

How to get readers from popular blogs (eg techcrunch)

I bet a lot of you guys are already doing this but it is my duty to tell everyone on how to increase your readerships. Most of you people must be reading popular blogs such as Techcrunch. Well techcrunch has over 350,000 readers per day and that is a very large number of readers. Imagine getting 2% of the 350,000 readers on your blog. That comes to 7000 readers and from that if you are able to convert 5% into your rss feed subscribers you will instantly have 350 more readers per day.

Now, the best way to get people to come to your blog from techcrunch is by having a comment which really stands out, make sure you add the url to your blog where it says website on the form. (dont not add the url in the comment itself or else it might get marked as a spam).

Example comment:

“That is a great news. Recently I published an article on my blog on how to get more readers from Gravatar site (depends on the article) and this should make it easier. Cheers on the news.”

This will get thereaders attention and they will click on your name from the comment which will lead to your blog or site :)

The fastest way to get indexed by Google

I have been getting a lot of email’s from readers asking the best and fastest way to getting indexed by Google.

Well from my experience, the fastest way to get indexed by google is by putting up a single article on Digg.com and and BANG your website should be indexed within 3-7 days.

I have personally done this for over 30 of my client websites and I have charged them over $200 USD for this. ( To just get indexed on Google.)

So there you go, this could save you a lot of money and time.I have let the big secret out in the wild.

Google Page Rank.

Are you trying to increase your websites or blogs pagerank? If the answer is yes, than I have a quick tip for all my readers.
A easy way to get a increase in pagerank is by adding more content to your blog or website daily. Why? Well according to one of the “google” guru’s he stated that google likes growing website and are credited by increase in pagerank. I am not talking a massive increase but between 1 and 2 higher pagerank. Now that 1 or 2 increase could mean difference between 0 or 2 in pagerank.
By having more content which is of course of good quality and high standards will get people linking to your website. Your readers will increase, your traffic will increase and your websites size will increase. So it all makes sense why google gives growing website an increase in PR.
More quality articles, more people linking to you and eventually that means a increase in your PR. I wrote around 3 articles per day for each blog.

* I have done two experiments on the theory above and the pageranks have increased from zero to two for both the websites.

Great Interview

I had a great pleasure of asking Sid from Rev2.org few questions about his blog and interest. Rev2.org is a blog about web 2.0 start ups.

1) Since when have you been doing rev2.org?

I’ve been writing rev2 for about two years. Back in 2004 when the blogs were starting to gain recognition, I installed WordPress as a subdomain on one of my sites and called it ‘Sid’s Ramblings.’ I wrote about web-related technonogies and such, then moved it to its own domain in the next month and renamed it to ‘The Daily Rundown.’ It wasn’t until about mid-2005 that I decided to really change focus from writing on all things web to purely Web 2.0 and startups under the ‘rev2.org‘ name.

2) What made you do rev2.org?

I think it’s really a combination of a few things. First and foremost, it’s my passion: I absolutely love writing about new web startups and technologies as such. It’s been an excuse to have a grasp on new things, but the fact that I can keep others up-to-date and excited as well makes it better. Secondly, I think people can find all this stuff interesting and exciting — like they would a regular trade magazine or newspaper — and I want to be involved in introducing consumers to these kinds of technologies and exciting them as to what holds for the future.

3) Why rev2.org and not something else?

In terms of the idea, I think there has always been space for a blog which solely and exclusively focuses on Web 2.0. I think as time has passed, the idea is actually grown itself rather than me deciding on what I should write about, etc. And as for the name, rev2 stands for ‘revolution 2′ which I think best describes this change we’re going through.

4) Do you enjoy writing about web 2.0?

To be honest, it’s one of the most enjoyable parts of my day. I’m passionate about everything I write about on rev2, and I think there hasn’t been a single instance where I’ve felt bored or lazy to cover something. Sure, finding the right startups and tools and products are hard to do, but once I’ve hit upon a good one I really can’t move out of my desk until I get a post up on it.

5) Is this your past time or full time job?

It is, and I think always will be, my hobby or a part-time thing I do for fun and some minor income. I’m aware that I could commit myself fully to rev2 and possibly grow it into something big, but I think too much of something can get repetitive or boring, at which time I won’t be truly passionate about what I say. I would write about 10 startups a day if I could, but I’d rather stay far enough from it that I actually enjoy using each and every single one.

6) What do you anticipate in the future of web 2.0 technology?

Good question. Making any definite prediction would be pointless, but I think something that is currently looking to point to the future is software on the web, like what Google’s doing with Office and the upcoming web-based version of Photoshop. Online storage and backup systems seem to be going somewhere too, but I think that’s more for the enterprise market.

7) Your top 5 web 2.0 websites?

Well, having reviewed more than 400 to date, that’s a toughie. :-) The ones I use most frequently (in no order) are probably YouTube, GMail, Del.icio.us , Twitter and Flickr.

8) Do you have any advice for our listeners?

My biggest advice for all readers would be to be a contributer rather than a traditional user when it comes to Web 2.0 services. Web 2.0 is based around the whole idea of two-way communication ( i.e. user feeds in data to the community and gets back the same), so the best way to carry this whole thing forward is by adding to it.

Thank You Sid, you are a legend.

Google Adsense

I have been going thru few forum threads in the post few days and I came across a very good question from a fellow blogger. The question was something like “Do you click on other bloggers adsense ads, while visiting their site?” There were varying answers to this and some said “yes” while others said “no”.

My advice to this question is Dont click on the ads unless you are really wanting to know about that particular ad. Why? I have used adsense before and so has many of my other friends. Few of my friends have actually been banned from google adsense for the particular reason of getting invalid clicks. The google adsense and adwords system is very powerful, complicated yet smart. It is able to track every click and logs the trend of the users who have been clicking on the ads.
As many of you must know by now that google will ban a users if their ads have been clicked repeatly from the same IP. Well when it comes to clicking on the adsense ads on blogs and if you do it everyday or every few days the system see a pattern and instantly blocks the adsense member from the program. I know you are probably trying to help your fellow bloggers to earn some extra money but believe me it will work for a short period of time but not for long period. The adsense system is too smart with all these fraud clicks. I am sure you do not want your fellow blogger to be blocked from the adsense program and they would not get any thing instead of that something they are getting. Its probably just a matter of $0.20, any ways please do not click on the ads if you are not actually intending to be interested on the products.

Remember Google has a very smart and sophiscated tracking system and the track your every click and probably move as 90% of the sites use google analytics. I bet they are able to gather alot of information about each user itself.
